The following are some questions from someone about the trade directories of Importers we offer and our answers:

Where did you guys get all this information from?

I am just try to confirm all your information is good lead. Not information
that you pull out from yellow page or google.

This is what I understand from working with our publisher for over 16 years.

1. They have been in business since 1973 - during that time they have developed their main database from various sources including direct requests, government organizations and business organizations. Each year they do an actual physical mailing to each importer in their database at which time the importer can request they be removed, updated or remain the same.

2. The above mailing goes out to over 155,000 in their database during a period of about 8 months on a geographic regional basis. New listings are added each year that are recevied from the same sources as noted in 1 above.

3. They do not compile from yellow pages. There is far more information contained with each listing in Interdata's database then what you may find in any yellow page listings which happen, by the way, to be very few.

4. They do not gather leads from the search engines.

6. Probably most of you are trading abroad from one way to the other, so you might agree with my observation about difficulties abroad. Surveyes show that at least 10-20% of businesses have lost deals because of language and intercultural differences.

Basically, what do we know about other cultures in general? Probably, in lots of cases, the answer is: as much as we can read in English.

Even for me to find information about Hungary that is written and up to date in English is a challenge. So I have to assume it would be as difficult for you too. So Trade-Eastern-Europe.com not only lists your offers in foreign languages, but tries to give you a cultural background!

Trends
Knowing what’s hot now is great, but knowing what’s going to be hot two months down the road and making sure you’re selling that product is even better! That’s what’s going to make you money and set you apart from the competition. Being able to identify and source future product trends is an invaluable tool that comes from experience and knowing your target market.

Competition
Competition is a part of any business, however, the smart entrepreneur will pick his or her playing field wisely and enter into an arena that they feel they can succeed in. Choose more unique product lines so you’re not directly competing with the big-box retailers (and every other Tom, Dick and Harry). Also, consider offering value added services like superior customer support and product guarantees so you’re not limited to competing on price. That way you don’t cut into your product margins.

Consumables
When looking for product lines, look for items that your customers will need to replace fairly regularly. I’m not encouraging you to sell poor quality products, all I’m suggesting is to consider selling products that have a recurring sales value. Laptops, clothing, furniture, these are all consumables i.e. customers need to buy these products more than once in a lifetime. By building out a customer base with recurring needs you encourage repeat business. Plus, repeat buyers are more open to other product lines and sales suggestions.

Quality
The golden rule: Don’t sell something that you wouldn’t give as a gift to a close friend or buy yourself. It’s that Simple.

And finally…
When starting out, the best advice to follow is to keep it simple. It’s very tempting for the new entrepreneur to tackle too much, too soon. You’re motivated, you’re excited and you fall into the trap of taking on too many product lines, and trying to appeal to too diverse of a market much too quickly. Start small, find out what sells and where there are margins, and build on that. It’s far easier (and less costly) to expand your operations when you’re enjoying success than it is to reel yourself back once you realize you’ve over extended yourself.

The key to a successful business is to know your products, know your market, and be able deliver one to the other. So do your research early on, and I guarantee that when you find a product line worth selling, you’ll be ahead of the curve.

How To Find LEGITIMATE LARGE VOLUME BUYERS For Your Products!

2010 will go down in the books as the year it became virtually impossible to find a database or Internet source of "LEGITIMATE" importing companies for your products.

First, in early June, we were informed of the main source of trade leads that has provided us with the ONLY international sales beyond those generated by our website in 22 1/2 years.

Now, even STAT-USA, the United States government's agency that has provided trade leads for as long as I can remember is closing September 30th, 2010.

I learned of the closing from a long-time business associate who was talking with the STAT-USA director earlier this month. He was informed by the director that STAT was ending their trade leads program because obtaining quality importer trade leads has become extremely difficult and the leads that most of the leads they have been getting simply are not very good quality.

It seems that Real (or legitimate) importers, the director stated, were no longer submitting their requirements through USA embassies because manufacturers, exporters and suppliers can now easily be found on the Internet (still another reason why your company needs a website, NOW).

So if the United States Government Trade Leads Service (one of the oldest I can remember) is closing due to lack of QUALITY importer/buyer leads, what do you think your chances are of finding LEGITIMATE BUYERS for your products?

The explanation from the top government agency that has offered trade leads for several decades should help you better understand why the publisher of the directories of importers we have advertised on our website since it was first posted to the Internet in 1999 is also closing.

Soon there will be NO importer directories of "legitimate" importers any longer. The publisher concluded that if the USA government cannot gather quality, legitimate import inquiries, then there is little hope that they will be able to continue to do so either.

Do you wish to follow the success of a REAL business or get eaten alive by the "sample seekers" many of which have businesses where they sell all the free samples that foolish suppliers are willing to send them at No Cost.

So What Is The Best Resource To Help You And Your Company Get In DIRECT Communication With LARGE VOLUME Buyers?

If you are seeking LEGITIMATE BUYERS of LARGE VOLUMES OF GOODS AND MERCHANDISE then your VERY BEST resource to provide you with DIRECT communication with LARGE VOLUME BUYERS can be found in SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) Business List Groups 50 and 51 which identify companies that are REAL Wholesalers and Distributors.

The advantage you gain over your competition by focusing your attention on a SIC coded database of Wholesalers and Distributors is that the VAST MAJORITY of exporters and exporting manufacturers are unaware these SIC business list groups exist. They, like just about every other exporting company, will continue to waste their time and money contacting the leads they find on FREE Internet bulletin boards. And, if you have not learned the lesson yet, the majority of the "importer" inquiries you will find there are either "Freebie Sample Seekers" or outright fraudsters.

Not to repeat myself, but I think this point needs to be emphasized - MOST "genuine" or "legitimate" Importers are no longer advertising the fact they are seeking products - proof is the closing of the US government's trade leads agency and the 33 year old publisher we have dealt with for 18 of those years.

Legitimate Importers, whether from the fear of exposing their email address, physical address or phone number to a worldwide audience of spammers and fraudsters or the fact they now know that MOST legitimate suppliers now have a website, simply ARE NO LONGER publishing their requests for product.

SIC Group 50/51 lists of Wholesalers and Distributors provide you and your company with direct access to ESTABLISHED companies that BUY PRODUCTS IN LARGE AMOUNTS, products your company may be exporting or manufacturing.

So, hopefully, you will now see why it makes COMMON SENSE that while your competition is out their spending their time and resources chasing freebie sample seekers, time wasters and fraudsters that you and your company can be targeting your marketing to REAL, HIGH VOLUME BUYERS and turning them on to the VALUE OF BUYING AND IMPORTING THOSE LARGE VOLUME PRODUCT PURCHASES FROM YOUR COMPANY!

An email received this evening brought about this little tip for ALL importers and exporters.

DO NOT ASSUME that the party you are trying to reach understands your phone number area code, country code, plus city code, etc..

Place the proper separators between the numbers and put your complete address in the email so they know what country they are expected to call, NEVER assume they are experts at making calls outside their country.

What brought this to my attention was an email that was basically blank with a telephone number only. The phone number had 9 digits starting with 2120000000 (not going to post the actual number for privacy reasons). I immediately assumed to be the 212 area code in the USA.

BUT WAIT!

Country code 21 is in North Africa and since about 50% of our 53,000 monthly website visitors are from OUTSIDE the USA, I simply do not know which country this person is from? And without nothing more than an email address and name, I cannot reply with the answers they may be seeking??

Here was my reply:

Thank you for the inquiry.

With 53K people visiting our website every month and dealing with thousands
of emails, we have to ask that you provide more details on what you submitted
your inquiry about?

We also do not know if you are located in the 212 area code or in the 21 country
code (about 50% of our 53K visitors are from outside the USA so we do not know
without proper code seperators).

Additionally, we have found that email provides a much faster means of providing
answers to legitimate inquiries that we may be able to assist you with and does
not expose us to hundreds of callbacks to sales people trying to sell us on our
long distance phone bill.

How To Find Suppliers And Manufacturers Using The Internet

Embrace the Internet when looking for Exporters, Suppliers or Manufacturers (Importers too but that is another post).

One of the most commonly asked questions I have received over the 23 years in this business is "how or where do I find suppliers or manufacturers who wish to export their products".

When I first got started way back in the 1980's I had to make trips to the library which was about a 24 mile round trip. I would often spend hours each month in the reference section of the library looking through the HUGE Green volumes of Thomas Register.

Each Thomas Register (TR) book (there were about 15) weighed about 5 pounds. Thomas Register now has ALL of that valuable information online and it is now accessible for FREE at: http://www.thomasnet.com

TR is the most comprehensive list of USA based manufacturing companies that I am aware of but one caveat - the vast majority of the listings are FREE to the manufacturer. Being FREE means little effort or expenditure of time or money on the part of the manufacturer to get their company listed....thus FREE for them is not always the best for you to contact.

There are literally tens of thousands of possible options on the Internet but some of the best are those that have cost the manufacturer/supplier money to have listed.

When a manufacturer/supplier pays to have their listing displayed it means they are "proactive" and are willing to go beyond FREE and these are far better for you as an Exporter agent/broker or export management company owner to contact....they are SEEKING buyers and are willing to pay for it.

One of the BETTER resources online that is often ignored due to Google's fast rise to search engine prominance is the YAHOO Directory.

The Yahoo Directory is provides multiple classifications allowing you to narrow your search to those companies specific to your needs such as the following which as you can see from the link identified Regional - China - Business and Economy - B2B - Manufacturing and the specific type of products these companies manufacture -

Most people using the Internet do not realize is that "most" of the companies listed in Yahoo's directory section have paid $299.00 to have their website reviewed and approved to be included. The $299 "does not" guarantee their site will be accepted, it merely pays to have Yahoo's editors review their site for appropriateness to a particular category. If they are not accepted, they do not get their $299 back and if they are they are required to pay $299 a year to keep their listing active.

It will make your life as an Exporter Agent/Broker or Export Management Company owner much easier to seek out companies that have taken the proactive step of promoting their products because they are actively seeking NEW potential markets for their products versus those who simply post a free listing in a directory.

Global Sources have opened their first China Sourcing Fair in Miami that is designed to help China suppliers expand to North America and Latin America, buyers from those continents source more conveniently
